Life after Thomas Cook

How should Thomas Cook staff go about looking for a new role?

Philip Price, founder of WorkAdvisor offers some practical advice for the 9,000 TC people in the UK suddenly left with no alternative but to look for a new role

The Thomas Cook staff in the UK will be dealing with some very difficult issues and it may well take them some time to feel able to get back into the job market. But for when they do, here are some relatively simple steps for how anyone can prepare well and put their best foot forward in the job market.

Have a good think about the next move

Notwithstanding recent events The Travel industry remains a dynamic and rewarding sector to work but unfortunately it will not be able to absorb the bulk of the TC staff. So it could be worth considering alternatives, you may work in Travel but your skills and experiences are highly transferable to other sectors; for example customer service workers will be in demand from many sectors, marketeers will find their B2C skills can work in any sector, not just travel and Retail staff will find that their customer service and technical skills can employed in the broader High St and contact centres.

Prepare your CV

An up to date CV will be required, it’s worth adding a personal statement and looking up some of the good CV writing advice that’s available online. Once you have a generic CV its best practice to tailor it to each application that you make, adapting it around the key requirements of the specific job description

Use your network

The Travel industry is very close knit and it highly likely that someone in your network will work for a company that will want to hear from you, even if you just pass on your CV to the right person in the organisation. Linkedin is a very useful tool, update your profile and start building connections

Use the Travel Weekly guide

Travel Weekly have put together a really useful guide for Thomas Cook staff listing the Travel businesses that are currently recruiting

Register with the right recruitment Agencies

There are several agencies that specialise in the Travel industry, they may not be able to help immediately but will offer advice and its worth registering for any future opportunities.

Travel Trade Recruitment

For roles outside of the industry its worth using the leading job boards, Reed, CV Library, Linkedin and Indeed, and register with the agencies that operate in the sectors you would consider.

Do your homework

When considering a role with a new employer its worth checking out workplace reviews form people that currently work there, has thousands of reviews on hundreds of travel companies.

We wish all Thomas Cook staff the best of luck in their search and the next chapter of their careers.
